Beyond Work
Beyond Work is driven by a simple purpose, to unearth the lives of people whose jobs are often invisible, and for the stories that come out to inspire us all to make the world of work a respectful, humane and kind place that rewards people with more than money.
Beyond Work documents humans at work using words and reportage photography, with no judgement or glorification. It's an attempt at unearthing the social, cultural and functional world of life at work and beyond work, that’s often invisible in everyday life.
This work is about looking at and observing everyday life, and in turn inspiring people to be more aware and sensitive to the needs of humans at work and beyond.
Alarm clocks primed
These are stories about the kind of work you might see at 5 am on a cold November morning when nearly everyone else is tucked up in bed sleeping, alarm clocks primed. There is a lot to learn about a person by shadowing them at work, and even more by observing them as they transition from home to work and back again.
This work aims to inspire the people that manage, create or have influence over our workplaces to think about people not just as a resource to include in profit and productivity calculations, but as daughters, dads, sisters, friends and above all else humans with needs way beyond money.
A selection of the workers
Projects Development Manager.
My name is Ben, Benjamin Paul Szobody.
It's a perversion; my name comes from a Hungarian great-grandfather, who went to the US to work on the railroads. But he was illiterate, so they misspelt his name at Ellis Island, so it is a permutation of what would have been Szabadi, meaning from the town of Szabad in Hungary.
Forester.
Most people are interested by it because they've never really met a Forester, especially in a city like Brighton, even though there are more true surgeons than trees in Brighton. So a lot of the time if I tell them what I do for the first time and I say forester, they say, "so do you climb trees"? We do all our management on the ground, and we do big spaces rather than just a single kind of species.
Working and stay at home mum.
My name's Stephanie Fletcher. I look after Erin (my 3 year old daughter) most days apart from one day when she's at nursery from eight till six. That involves a lot of cleaning, tidying, feeding and running around, entertaining her. On the day when she's at nursery I try and do everything else that doesn't fit into toddler time, so dentist appointments and stuff like that, which is just harder with her.
